Services
Public sector contracting and consultancy
I've spent over 15 years in design, much of it on UK government services. I design interaction and user experience for services that have to work for everyone, and meet the GDS Service Standard.
Is this right for you?
A good fit if you:
- Are a government department, agency or supplier building a digital service
- Need an interaction or UX designer who knows the GOV.UK Design System
- Are preparing for a service assessment
Probably not a fit if you:
- Need a designer inside IR35
- [Other not-a-fit criterion]
What I do
1: Interaction design
- What it is
- Designing the screens, journeys and interactions of government services, using the GOV.UK Design System and HMRC patterns.
- What you get
- Prototypes in the GOV.UK Prototype Kit
- Interaction patterns
- Design history
2: UX design
- What it is
- Working across the service to make sure it meets user needs, from discovery to live.
- What you get
- Journey maps
- Service design input
- Assessment support
Standards I work to
GOV.UK Design System
Proven, tested patterns, so your service works the way people expect government services to work.
GDS Service Standard
Design decisions shaped by the Service Standard from discovery onwards, not retrofitted before an assessment.
WCAG 2.2 AA
The accessibility standard public sector websites and services are required to meet, built in from the start.

Just some of the organisations I've worked with
I worked with Brian at HMRC and he was everything you could want from a Lead Designer, supportive, full of design expertise, good ideas and common sense, incredibly experienced, says the right thing at the right time, knows when to talk and when to listen.
He was overseeing many teams on a large programme of work, I've no idea how he held the details of so many complex tax services in his mind at the same time, but he not only managed this, he made it look easy (which I know it wasn't!).
Brian's great with people, his communication skills are top notch and it's clear he's always got the end user in mind and is gunning for the best possible outcomes for them, while ensuring that business stakeholders and his colleagues are happy too.
I'd recommend Brian for any project needing an experienced, safe pair of hands. I hope we have the opportunity to work together again.
Questions people ask
Do you work through agencies?
Yes. I work directly with government organisations and through agencies and suppliers, whichever suits the project.
What security clearance do you hold?
I currently hold BPSS clearance and I'm happy to be sponsored for SC clearance.
Are you available for remote work?
Yes. I work remotely by default and can come on site [by arrangement]. Get in touch to check my current availability.
Which phases do you work in?
All of them: discovery, alpha, beta and live. I especially enjoy joining early and seeing a service through to the end.
Do you get involved in service assessments?
Yes. I've been involved in a number of alpha and beta service assessments, and I can help your team prepare for theirs.
